Watford Borough Council has made tenant safety a priority by prosecuting a landlord who failed to address serious mould problems in a rented property. The case arose after residents reported worsening conditions, prompting an investigation by the Council’s Environmental Health team.
Mould Causing Significant Health Hazard To Tenant’s
The team discovered significant health hazards, particularly concerning dangerous mould in the children’s bedroom. Consequently, an Improvement Notice was issued, alongside an Emergency Prohibition Order, to restrict the use of this hazardous room.
The Environmental Health team cited the property as a “significant health hazard,” issuing multiple notices. A Council representative added, “The landlord’s disregard for safety has real impacts on residents’ health.”
Landlord Fined £10K For Severe Mould
Failing to make required improvements, the landlord faced legal action that led to a substantial fine of £10,451. Mayor Peter Taylor expressed the Council’s strong stance, saying, “Landlords neglecting their responsibilities will not be tolerated,” reinforcing Watford’s commitment to high standards in rental housing. This legal precedent emphasises the Council’s dedication to protecting vulnerable tenants from health risks associated with poor property maintenance.
Watford Council Fine Landlord Over “Uninhabitable” Property
Watford Council’s Environmental Health team found large parts of the property uninhabitable, particularly affecting a family with three young children. Despite multiple Improvement Notices, the landlord failed to address severe mould issues that posed health risks. Due to inaction, a £10,451 fine was imposed, and the children’s bedroom was prohibited from use due to extreme mould. Mayor Taylor emphasised that “everyone deserves to live in a safe, warm home,” underscoring Watford Council’s dedication to tenant safety.
Councils in England Strictly Enforcing Housing Regulations For Mould
This case demonstrates the importance of regular inspections and swift action when issues arise in rental properties. The Council stated it would continue to enforce housing regulations strictly to prevent similar cases, ensuring landlords uphold the standards expected by law.
The council’s actions went beyond just levying fines. Watford council ensured the landlord could not rent out the uninhabitable rooms until repairs were certified complete. “We’re committed to protecting families from unsafe living conditions,” a council spokesperson stated, reinforcing the council’s strict stance on tenant safety. The children affected were reportedly highly vulnerable to mould spores, creating a concerning health risk. The family has since been relocated, and the property remains under prohibition.
